This is the home page for the Introduction to Information Systems (ACS-1803-052). This course provides an introduction to the field of Information Systems (IS). The Fall Class Session 2019 is held at the University of Winnipeg. Classes are scheduled 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Wednesday evenings from September 5 to November 28, 2019 in room 3C01. Please note that there are no classes during Reading Week, October 13 - 19, 2018. This course provides a student with a basic conceptual understanding of computers and the basics of database and telecommunication technology. Then, it attempts to address the question: “how can computers help a business (or other organization)?”. Here we will cover highlights of business application systems that support the functions of accounting, finance, marketing, human resource management and manufacturing. This will lead us into more advanced applications such as Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Customer Relationship Management Systems, Executive Information Systems, Decision Support Systems and Expert Systems. Further, we will examine the world of electronic commerce. The final section of the course introduces the student to the process of developing a customized computer-based information system, presenting the system development life cycle and outlining the function of Information Systems in an organization. In this course the student will develop information systems literacy. He / she will develop a thorough overview of the different ways information systems can be used in organizational management and operations.
